Overview:

Working Title: Dino Wick

Concept: Player controls classic Chrome Dino, except that he has a shotgun now! With the ability to slow down time for a small period, the goal is to survive waves of incoming enemy monsters using precise and sharp shooting skills. There may be powerups like super jump or more powerful guns that can be obtained through collectibles. The game has simple side scrolling and jumping mechanics and a sarcastic concept with modern twists. Get ready to rewrite dino history!

Genre: Arcade / Action

Concept Creation Process and Influences:

  • Started with the idea of creating an endless runner and wanted it to be as simple as possible to make. So, decided to go with Chrome Dino, simple yet addictive. But then wanted to add something different, at least things I've learned through past tutorials. Came up with the idea of it also being a shooting game sarcastically but eventually settled on it.
  • The main idea of the game having slow-mo  effects is from an android game called Johnny Trigger. Unlike Johnny Trigger where time slows down itself in necessary situations, Dino Wick may allow player to have the control over time manipulation, making it also an asset for survival.
  • Lastly, the game title is obviously inspired from the John Wick movie franchise, one of my most favorite action movies where guns also play a big role. If the game succeeds as I imagine, there might also be added a John Wick inspired storyline which will be told in the beginning, not throughout the game but just to add a little more fun.
  • I believe playing games like Contra on java phones as a kid can also be an inspiration behind such a game idea.

Audience and Competitive Analysis:

  • Audience:
    • The game is an arcade style action shooting game, targeted at players who enjoy quick reflexes and intense combat.
    • Players with a pixel art aesthetics can be also drawn toward it as the game features pixel arts, inspired from the original Chrome Dino game.
    • Appeals to both nostalgic gamers who remember classic arcade titles and new players seeking engaging challenges. All the music added to the game shall also be in 8bit format, perfectly recreating a retro game environment. With a quite thrilled shooting style, it targets the new generation players too.
    • Having cool gameplay settings including chain kills, it can target different age groups including teens and adults.
  • Competitive Analysis:

      • Humor: A dinosaur with a gun is not something you see everyday.

Game Treatment and Concept Art:

     Story: In a world where dinosaurs still existed, existed the distant ancestor of John Wick, the boogeyman of the dinosaurs, the myth, the legend himself, Dino Wick. He is a dino of focus, commitment and sheer will. Rumors say, some people saw him kill 3 triceratopses, with a palm tree, with a f-ing palm tree. Since a group of monsters killed his dog, he started a genocide, massacring every enemy on his way to vengeance. Is this going to be the real reason behind dino extinction?

     Treatment: The game unfolds in a classic Chrome Dino landscape with a few additions. Wick (player), armed with nothing but a shotgun and his wits, must navigate through this treacherous terrain, where every step could be his last.  He has the special ability to slow down time, but only for a certain period every time. This mechanism not only adds a layer of strategy but also allows for cinematic moments. Players need to use this ability wisely because it's limited and takes a wave to complete to recharge.

  • Various kinds of enemies have different characteristics and weapons. Most of them come flying and the rests, walking or sliding.
  • Power-ups are scattered throughout the levels, allowing Wick to gain ability to super jump, increased firepower or invulnerability.
  • Levels are transitioned in a smooth way to keep players engaged and thrilled without having to see a loading screen so often.
  • Bullets are irresistible and indestructible, making chain kills possible if enemies get randomly aligned.

The game's art style is based on pixel art and all the music used in the game are converted into 8bit or some directly taken from any old arcade game, creating the charm of retro games. The character and surrounding details are not so great, but gameplay mechanics are something to crave all attentions.

     Gameplay Mechanics: Since this is only the game's concept planning and not yet the entire game, gameplay mechanics are also just plans to act upon too. They may be subject to change depending on gameplay experience.

  • Move character left and right by pressing A and D to go through waves, dodge attacks and go to next level.
  • Press Left Mouse to slow down time and Right Mouse to shoot.
  • Move Mouse to change aiming direction.
  • Press Space to jump.
